Tag Heuer the History
It is this connection to sporting prowess. That lies at the root of Tag’s greatest achievements. The company, having patented numerous developments in horology. But let’s start from the beginning. When in 1860, a young man by the name of Edouard Heuer. Set up a small watch making workshop, in St. Imier in Switzerland. Only 20 years old at the time. Little did Edouard know, that his name would one day become instantly recognizable. As one of the world’s great watch brands.
The company quickly grew and in 1883. Tag Heuer was awarded a silver medal. At the International Exhibition in Amsterdam. By 1887 they held a patent for the oscillating pinion. Which is still used today. More patents followed; in 1895. Tag became one of the first companies to introduce, a waterproof casing for pocket watches. Whilst in 1911, a year after entering the American market. The famous ‘Time of Trip’ was introduced. Designed for use in airplanes and automobiles. This clock within a clock. Not only showed the current time. But thanks to the small dial on the top half of the face. Also displayed how long the journey had taken so far.
The connection to sports and athletes was cemented in 1916. When Tag Heuer invented the world’s first stop watches. That were accurate to 1/100th of a second. The Mikrograph and the Microsplit, became hugely successful. With the Microsplit being able to measure the timing. Of two races or events simultaneously. Yet just a few months later, in the very same year. The Semikrograph and the Semicrosplit followed. With a precision timing of 1/50th per second.
Of course a Tag Heuer watch, is not only a purely functional watch. And one year before the stop watch was introduced. A line of elegant ladies wristwatches was designed and it is this dedication to groundbreaking invention. Combined with style, that makes the brand so successful today.
